Smith Porter was living his dream until he was forced to give up his job as a police officer and return home to take over the family business. So when his old partner calls in a favor, Smith agrees to flip the neglected house and keep an eye on Jay's baby sister. He’s a master at restoration and rebuilding, but Smith never expected that tearing the walls down around Mellie's heart to be his most difficult project yet. And when her life is threatened, keeping her safe is the most important job he’ll ever have.

Having recently become addicted to Anna Brooks' writing I was anxiously waiting for this one and it was everything I expected it to be...and more. There is plenty of suspense as well as a sexy romance to make this a book I will read over and over. I was drawn into this story from the first page, not wanting to put it down. The characters are well written and the story line vivid, as if I was watching a movie play out in front of me.Mellie has been through an experience that left her scared of the outside world but when her grandfather leaves her a house she sees it as a way to fight her fears. Smith Porter was her brothers partner on the police force and as a favor he is keeping an eye on her. And then the suspense starts to build as outside forces are determined to prevent Mellie and Smith from any chance at a HEA.
I loved the relationship between Mellie and Smith. They both have things in their lives that prevent them from just jumping into a relationship with each other. Will they be able to find their HEA? Will the outside forces prevent them from ever having a chance of the happiness the deserve? I higly recommend that you read this story and all of her other books.

Fixing Fate A Pleasant Valley Novel
By Anna Brooks
5 out of 5 stars
The story Fixing Fate A Pleasant Valley Novel by Anna Brooks is a romantic suspense book. This is the story of Mellie Jamison and Smith Porter. Mellie is afraid of the world after a horrific situation causes her to shut herself away from the world. Now she has inherited a house from a grandfather she never met. She decides to remodel and flip the home. That is when she meets Smith. Smith was living his dream of being a police officer until he for forced to return home to take over the family business. His former partner, who is also Mellie’s brother, asks him to help Mellie flip the house and to keep any eye on her as well. They begin to find they are attracted to one another. Then danger threatens Mellie again and Smith vows that nothing will ever hurt her again. Can he keep his promise?
I absolutely love this book. It is a story of how love is found when it is least expected and the lengths that one man will go to make sure his true love stays safe. You go through so many emotions when reading this book. You feel for Mellie and Smith and the tragedies that have impacted their lives. There is sadness and pain, however, the love they share is bigger than both. It is frightening to read of how Mellie is stalked and heartbreaking the effect it has on both her and Smith. I love how even though Mellie has a hard time feeling safe while she does everyday things like going to the store, she still perseveres and is determined to lead as normal a life as she can. Smith is one hot man that any woman would want to have protecting her. The two other characters that have roles in this story is Jay, Mellie’s brother, and Erik, who is like a brother to Smith. Jay is and has always been very protective of Mellie and doesn’t like it one bit when he finds out Smith is falling for her. Erik is someone that is haunted by the same memories that haunt Smith. They were once very close however it seems that both are trying to drown out the pain of the past. Smith does, however, accept his help in keeping Mellie safe. This is a suspenseful and beautiful romance story. I highly recommend it. You won’t want to put it down until you finish. The story does contain sensitive and mature content. It should be read by those 18 years or older.
I stuck it out and finished this book. There were times when I rolled my eyes and times when I wanted to throw my across the room, but I stuck it out. Other reviews (I'm so surprised this one ends up with a 4.5 star average, because to me it's a 2.5 star book) give the character and plot details, but, like another review said, I had such high hopes for this story and it ultimately ended up being a disappointment. I found the plot developments concerning Mellie to be entirely implausible (can this girl not get a break?) but the Smith/Mellie relationship kept me interested. It was slow going at times, and there are some editing/writing style issues for sure, but in the end, it rates as a fair/good story for me. Had the plot not gotten so over-the-top, it would have rated higher. The most redeeming quality is Smith, but even his character has some issues. In some cases, he does and says the most sweet things, and in other ways, as he and Mellie become more intimate, he sounds like a douche. It's those inconsistencies that ruined this one for me.
Here's another fail for me . . . Sadly (
This was a case of too-much-too-soon and a plot line that was all over the freakin place. I love insta-love/lust but this was just not working for me.
The h, Mellicent, aka Mellie a 22 year old who has closed herself off completely for everyone and everything for the last six years. (view spoiler) The only person she is close to, is her brother. Anyways, so out of the blue, her estranged maternal grandfather dies and wills her his rundown family home. She decides to go outside her comfort zone by driving down alone and visiting the house to see about repairs and sell it as soon as possible.
Her brother hooks her up with a contractor, Smith, who was at one time, her cop brother's partner. Smith has his own can of worms he has to deal with but overall he was okay. Not great but okay.
From their first meeting, things felt forced and lacking in any believable attraction, sexual or otherwise. Side note just because it says they instantly wanted each other doesn't actually make the reader instantly pair them together. We need details, some inner dialogue, something that teases and provokes and builds on that attraction to make it believable.
So aside from the luke warm feelings these two gave off, I think that having two wierdos after the h was overdoing it just a tad bit. This is where the too-much-too -soon bit comes in. It didn't make any sense to me to add that especially since it didn't come off as well thought out. I get it was supposed to be a red herring thing but it didn't come off as a well executed idea.
This was my first by this author but again, the writing style was not for me. It reminded me too much of KA, with the rambling and saying 100 words when 25 would have worked just fine.
